Why Father's Day 2022 is celebrated

Father's Day history begins in 1910 when it was first celebrated on the third Sunday in June by the Sonora Smart Dodd. Father's Day is celebrated to show love and gratitude for all that fathers are doing to us, and it is a day to make fathers feel love and gratitude.

Sonora Smart Dodd

In 1909, a year after the introduction of Father's Day in West Virginia, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd set out to establish Father's Day. Dodd questioned the existence of 'Mother's Day' but not 'Father's Day and asked her congregation to introduce 'Father's Day.

Dodd questioned the fact that there is a 'Mother's Day' but no 'Father's Day' and lobbied the local community and government to change that. Originally, she wanted Father's Day to be celebrated on June 5, her father's birthday. This was in honor of her father, a Civil War veteran who lost his wife in the birth of a child and raised six children alone. In Washington state, Father's Day was first celebrated in June 1910, but the date was moved to June 16.

Father's Day gradually spread to other states but wasn't as popular as Mother's Day. This is thought to be due to women being more sentimental and appreciating gifts and signs of gratitude. These ideas seem completely outdated today, but that's what many men thought, and the day didn't always go smoothly.

World War II and Nixon

That changed during World War II, when the advertising industry used Father's Day to promote troops on the battlefield. By the end of the war, Father's Day had become a national event. In 1972, in the midst of his re-election campaign, Richard Nixon finally declared Father's Day a public holiday and signed a corresponding law. By this time, the UK was already celebrating Father's Day, following in the footsteps of the US. Now it's a day everyone knows.

Controversies

In the 1930s, there was a campaign in the U.S. aimed to abolish Mother's Day and the newly introduced Father's Day and turn it into a comprehensive 'Parents' Day'. This idea was quickly refuted as people bought gifts and cards to celebrate the two events, thus boosting the local economy.
